Kazakhstan’s Political Transition

Conference at Nazarbayev University

(September 20, 2019)

28 years after its independence, Kazakhstan is experiencing the first political transition in its history. Many wonder what will be the consequences of this political evolution which raises many questions. For instance, what can be expected from the governance of Kazakhstan’s new President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev? What kind of changes can be expected from this new prince? In light of the protests that followed the last presidential election, what can we expect in the near future in terms of democratisation? What kind of assessment can we make of Nursultan Nazarbayev’s reign as Head of State? All these questions and many others deserve to be explored.

This one-day conference in English will gather experts on Kazakhstani politics who will propose original multi angle analysis about the question of political transition in Kazakhstan. This conference will be held on September 20, 2019 at Nazarbayev University. Scholars interested to participate are invited to send a 250 word abstract in English by August 25, 2019 at : jean-francois.caron@nu.edu.kz. Participation to this conference is free, but participants not residing in Nur-Sultan are expected to take care of their own accommodation and transport fees. There is a possibility for the proceedings of the conference to be published in the series «The Steppe and Beyond: Studies on Central Asia» with Palgrave MacMillan.
