The untimely demise of Dr. Schoenbach is an irreparable loss to the NU community
It is with great sadness that the Autonomous Organization of Education “Nazarbayev University” (hereinafter referred to as Nazarbayev University, NU) informs of the passing of Dr. Christian Schoenbach, Full Professor, Chair of the Department of Biology at the School of Sciences and Humanities, and a respected member of our university community. Dr. Schoenbach untimely passed away on April 15th, 2023.
The entire Nazarbayev University community is shocked and saddened by this loss. Dr. Schoenbach had two tenures at NU: 2013-2016 and 2018-present. During this time he was a highly esteemed leader who contributed to the Biology Department, to the School – SST first and then SSH, and to NU in many different functions at various times, as Professor, Chair, and Vice Dean for Research (STEM) of SSH. His rational and strategic thinking, his attention to detail, and his exceptional organizational skills helped shape today’s Department of Biology and the School. He brought to Nazarbayev University his large experience in Japan and Singapore, as well as his international reputation. Among his academic achievements, he was elected President of Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Network, of the International Society of Computational Biology. Dr Schoenbach will be sorely missed.
