Dr. Hoyoun Koh joined the faculty of Nazarbayev University in Fall 2016 after completing his doctoral degree at the University of Maryland. Prior to his doctoral training, Dr. Koh worked for Ilmin International Relations Institute in Seoul, where he conducted research on the US-Korea alliance and security relations in East Asia.
He specializes in conflict, experimental research, and East Asia. His dissertation is about the responding behavior of state in conflict situations, based on the bargaining model of war. He employs various research methods, including experiments, archival research, and field works. Papers based on his dissertation were presented at conferences and are currently under review for publication.
He is currently working on several projects, including the interpretation (or deciphering) of North Korea’s political messages and an experiment on the costs of commitment problem in a bargaining situation. He has a book project as well, based on his dissertation, about the choice of concession by states in conflict.
