Dr. Maja Savevska is Assistant Professor in International Political Economy at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nazarbayev University. She joined the Political Science and International Relations Department in Fall 2016. She completed Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate in Globalisation, Europe and Multilateralism at University of Warwick and Université Libre de Bruxelles. Her PhD mobility program was fully funded by the European Commission. Her previous appointments include a residential fellowship at the Institute for Global Law and Policy at Harvard Law School following her successful completion of her PhD.

Broadly defined, Dr. Savevska’s research interests lie at the intersection of International Political Economy (IPE) and European Union (EU) Studies. Her doctoral thesis consisted of developing a Polanyian approach aimed at investigating the emergence of a new socio-environmental paradigm within the EUDr. Savevska current work is two-fold: a) formulating a post-Polanyian perspective that abandons the terminological fight over qualifying the EU as embedded or disembedded and instead it exploits the analytical potential of Polanyi’s concepts of improvement and habitation, b) examining the effects of the European Semester, the new macroeconomic surveillance mechanism, on social Europe.
