19th International Conference on Turkish Linguistics first time in Central Asia
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nazarbayev University hosted the 19th International Conference on Turkish Linguistics from Friday, August 17, 2018 through Sunday, August 19, 2018 under the supervision of Professor Uli Schamiloglu
This conference, which traces its origin back to a meeting at the University of California-Berkeley in 1982, has since convened at the leading universities in Istanbul, London, Ankara, Mainz, Uppsala, Izmir, Szeged, Oxford, and other leading academic centers. It meets once every two years, alternating between a university in Turkey and a university outside Turkey. This is the first ever meeting in Central Asia.
Within the conference was two special mini-conferences, the first a workshop on “Documentation of Endangered Turkic Languages of Siberia”. The second is on “Ambiguous [V+V] Sequences in Turkic and Other Transeurasian Languages”.
There was also 7 keynote addresses by:
- Lars Johanson (Mainz University, Germany)
- Henryk Jankowski (Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland)
- Gregory Anderson (Living Tongues Institute, USA)
- Saule Tazhibaeva (L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, Kazakhstan)
- Älimkhan Zhunisbek (Akhmet Baitursynov Institute of Linguistics, Kazakhstan)
- Irina Nevskaya (Frankfurt University and Berlin Free University, Germany & Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia)
- Sumru Özsoy (Boğaziçi University, Turkey)
Over 60 papers by over 100 authors and co-authors were presented at the conference. Participants were from many different countries in North America, Europe, and Asia.
The conference was held thanks to the cooperation of the Department of Kazakh Language and Turkic Studies and the Department of Languages, Linguistics, and Literatures, as well as the International Turkic Academy and L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University.
