Joint Discussion on “Stalin’s Nomads” and the Great Famine in Kazakhstan
In a collaborative effort between the Department of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies of Nazarbayev University and Foliant Publishing House, a significant discussion featuring Dr. Robert Kindler unfolded on Tuesday, January 16, at Red Hall of Nazarbayev University. Dr. Kindler, a historian from Freie Universität in Berlin and the author of “Stalin’s Nomads,” engaged the audience with insights into the Great Famine/Asharshylyk in Kazakhstan. The translated Kazakh version of his influential work was released by Foliant in 2023.
Joining Dr. Kindler were Mr. Oten Akhmet, a versatile writer, theater critic, journalist, and translator, responsible for the translation of the book into Kazakh. Miss Aliya Ashim, a journalist, film director, and founder of the youtube channel Qorek, also participated and enriched the discussion with her unique perspectives.
The event drew an impressive attendance of over 250 participants and was moderated by Mikhail Akulov, Assistant Professor at the Department of History, Philosophy and Religious studies.
