Seminar “History of the study of ancient DNA”

On March 5, 2019, in honor of the discovery of a unique laboratory for the study of materials obtained during archaeological excavations, a seminar on the “History of the study of ancient DNA” was held at Nazarbayev University School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Domestic and foreign archaeologists, genetics and historians pointed out the secrets of historical events in the Eurasian steppes and the importance of analyzing the DNA of humans, plants, and animals found in this region. In his presentation, Professor Uli Schamiloglu from the Kazakh Language and Turkic Studies Department stressed that based on the results of DNA analysis, it is possible to investigate a plague epidemic in the Golden Horde. Also, Andrey Filchenko, chair of the department of languages, linguistics, and literature, noted that there is great potential for working with this data for cultural and linguistic diversity.
